Having attended Harvard and Oxford (where she was elected president of the Oxford Union, a breeding ground for future Prime Ministers of England), Benazir was beautiful, brilliant, and part of a political dynasty. |

Benazir has been accused of living lavishly at the expense of the poor of Pakistan. Like her father, she styled herself as a Socialist and Populist. However, the Bhutto family owns vast estates in southern Sindh province, some of which are supposedly worked by indentured servants. Bhutto's supporters contend that she and her party have done more to help the poor of her country than anyone else.
Benazir was dogged with accusations of corruption since her arrival as a political power. Her husband Asif Ali Zardari is sometimes referred to as “Mr. Ten Percent” for his alleged eagerness to award government contracts in exchange for bribes. Bhutto and her supporters in the PPP have characterized these charges as politically motivated. |
